New York City 2011

I needed to be in New York City and ended up having enough spare time to visit some of the attractions. In particular, I wanted to and was able to visit the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, The New York Public Library, Rockefeller Center to see the Christmas Tree, and even got to see Central Park and a few other attractions. Some of the sections have video which should prove enjoyable. Enjoy.

Metropolitan Museum

I've been wanting to visit the Metropolitan Museum for quite some time as they have a fine collection of impressionist paintings, which are my favorite. Because flash photography is not allowed, some of the photos will appear somewhat dark and will not appear optimal. Still, I hope you enjoy them. Some of the rooms did not allow photos to be taken. I need to go back as I only saw a fraction of the impressionist works housed at the museum.

Museum of Modern Art

I decided to visit the Museum of Modern Art as they have a wonderful collection of impressionistic art. This trip to New York City saw me seeking out the impressionist painters both here at the MoMA and at the Metropolitan museum. While I am not a great fan of modern art, per se, they did have a retrospective exhibition on Willem de Kooning, which was incredible, but I was not allowed to take photographs.

Central Park

After visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I decided to walk down to Central Park via 5th Avenue and do some window shopping along the way. Along with the photos, you will also find a short video of skaters in the Central Park Skating Rink and some carol singers at the Bethesda Arcade.

Rockerfeller Center

No trip to New York City at Christmas time is complete without visiting Rockerfeller Center to see the Christmas tree, the skaters on the rink and the shows on the streets.

New York City Library

The New York Public Library (NYPL) is the largest public library in North America and is one of the United States' most significant research libraries. I wanted to visit the library because they have some wonderful special collections. While they don't allow photography in the special collections section, I was able to see the rough draft of the Declaration of Independence, a Guttenberg bible, Virgina Woolf's manuscripts, letters and notebooks, and even the stuffed Winnie the Pooh toys.

Bryant Park

Bryant Park. It is just behind the New York Public Library and it was a fun place to visit in the evening especially at this time of year as they have a bit of a flea market going on and a skating rink. I visited almost every evening and there was always something fun going on, especially watching adults ride the carrousel.

Inside and Around Andaz Hotel

This trip I stayed at the Andaz Hotel because of its location which is close to everything: across from the New York Public Libray and within walking distance of Rockerfeller Center, Macy's, and Times Square. When I return to New York, hopefully in the Spring, I plan to stay here once again.

Times Square

No trip to New York City is complete without a night-time visit to Times Square. So, one evening I braved the cold and walked all over the square. It was quite fun to see the people enjoy themselves and see all the well-know theaters and the plays they were putting on.

Macy's Department Store

Macy's Department Store is a must see at Christmas time. They create some wonderful Christmas displays on their store-front windows and this year was not exception. You will find a short video depicting the displays at the end of this section.

Fifth Avenue

After leaving the Museum of Modern Art, I decided to go back to Fifth Avenue and then head South to Central Park. Along the way I did some window shopping and could not help but be fascinated by all the people walking by. You saw everything on Fifth Avenue this day. Young folks, old folks, folks from all parts of the world. Men with their trophy wives all decked out and other couples much more sensibly dressed. It was a mini-United Nations on Fifth Avenue this day.

911 Memorial

I decided to visit the 911 Memorial. It was a deeply moving and sad experience, but I am glad I did it.
